Tom and Linda Todd's maple syrup business has picked up a lot of speed lately. The Todds operate MKS Enterprises in upstate New York. Their main business is selling Northern New York Maple Syrup and the equipment used for maple syrup harvest. The Todds had been using dial-up Internet service for years, and it was a struggle.
"We download a lot of material for our business," Tom said. "Labels for shipping, postage, pictures, updates, plus business research and customer contacts. It would take us all day to accomplish these tasks."
The Todds decided to invest in high-speed satellite Internet service from WildBlue, supplied by Charlie LaShome of Heavenly Satellite in Norwood, New York. They saw the difference in what WildBlue could do for their business and productivity right away.
"Trying to reach the outside world with dial-up just wasn't working for a rural business on a country road," Tom said. "Now we're not in upstate New York anymore, we're on the information superhighway. It's like going from a horse to a truck."
MKS deals with several hundred producers, and between the maple syrup and the equipment there is a lot of shipping coordination and other communications that are crucial to their success.
"It used to be that there just weren't enough hours in the day," Tom said. "Now, with the high-speed satellite Internet, we've put another hour back in the day. From a bottom line standpoint, we're able to do more in a day because we're not sitting in front of the computer for three or four hours. This was a good business decision."
