Network Operations Center Technician (NOC) II

SUMMARY: 
The Mid Tier 3 Network Operations Center Technician support position working under the direction of NOC management staff. Essential responsibilities consist of providing Production network and systems surveillance and performing moderately complex fault management and configuration tasks in support of customers and customer supporting systems.  The focus of this position is on identifying and isolating large-scale systems and network issues.

ACCOUNTABILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Monitor the network/systems, document network events and take corrective action in response to alarms and traps.
  • Perform network and systems configuration changes using standard technical methods and procedures.
  • Identify and communicate opportunities for process improvement to supervisory staff.
  • Provide assistance to Junior Tier 3 Network Operations Center Technician as an escalation point and as an information resource.
  • Document and communicate network and systems event status using established systems and business practices.
  • Analyze network and systems events to determine root cause and suggest preventive measures against repeat occurrences
  • Provide timely escalations and notifications as required by procedure.
  • Primary Production point-of-contact and coordination for vendors, service providers, carriers and partners.
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be organized and capable of tracking/managing multiple issues simultaneously.
  • Must have superior communications skills, both verbal and written, and be able to convey complex issues in a concise manner.
  • The ability to collaborate and function as part of a team is essential.
  • Excellent understandings of networking and UNIX systems administration are key skills.
  • Knowledge of the OSI model layers is desired. 
  • Operator-level knowledge of DOCSIS-compliant systems is desired. 
  • Must exercise sound judgment and make reasonable decisions based on factual information.
  • Must be detail oriented and capable of executing precise command strings as well as addressing and device names at NMS interfaces.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Visio and Project products

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Associates degree from a college or trade school in computer science, engineering, or related technical discipline is preferred. Relevant experience may be substituted.
  • 3 years of providing customer support, performing maintenance, monitoring, or configuration work in a 7x24x365 technical operations environment is desired.
  • Experience with Juniper, Foundry, and other networking and security equipment
  • Experience with DOCSIS 2 standards
  • Experience and understanding of Sun server hardware and Solaris OS
